Why this book and why now?
Just like with Dominion, this story was inspired by conversations with my wife that left us feeling there’s more to say about Emmy Whittaker and her friends. Aside from the romance, it’s about persevering over prejudice, and I think the time is always right for that.
What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?
This one stayed close to the first inspiration. It’s all about the emotions, the romance and the way music can connect and heal.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
Emmy would be a fun person to hang out with. I think in general I wouldn’t be at serious odds with most of my characters, though they certainly would be mad at me for some of the things I’ve done to them. On the other hand, they have awesome adventures and HEAs, so they couldn’t be too mad, right?
Do your character names have special significance or meaning?
Sometimes, though it’s not super deep in this story. I come up with names quickly (or my wife does), and when they feel right, I run with them. Do I see the characters right away when I think of those names? If the answer is yes, then I know they’re right.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, because of all the performances.
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
Daisy Jones & The Six, biographies of queer women. Everything that has to do with music for Emmy. Andrea would be interested in political figures.
Aside from the obvious food and shelter, what 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?
A guitar for sure, a comfy pair of leather pants and a tank top.
One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it. What do they do?
Emmy might borrow her brother’s cabin for a romantic getaway with Andrea. The cabin is in the story, though they are there for other reasons, and making new memories would be a good idea.
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book!
Emmy and her family and friends would have a huge party at a family restaurant/bar called Macy’s, and drinks would be whatever is on the menu! The owners might come with a special cocktail for the occasion.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Emmy’s own song, Keep My Heart, for it’s special significance.
