Why this book and why now?
This book was a stretch for me when I wrote it. It is a speculative novel, and all I’d written before was romance. Part of it came to me in a dream. Two cousins from a big family with powers who couldn’t be apart. My daughter Haley and I spent several hour long phone calls hashing out the world and how the powers would work. I started writing it, but was still intimidated. I decided to write it for NaNo to force myself to wrestle with it, not sure it would work. I was really happy with the result, though! And so I submitted it to Bold Strokes and it’s my first traditionally published novel.
Would you and your main character(s) get along?
I think Joan and I would have probably gotten along as teenagers. My friend group was all rather academically focused, like Joan is. Although she’s much more driven than I ever was! I also admire her, Sabrina, and Ellie for taking matters into their own hands.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
I think Joan and Sabrina probably binge Riverdale together. They’d enjoy talking about all the drama and also teenagers out there doing things for themselves.
What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?
Can we count people? Because Joan would definitely want Ellie and Sabrina at least. Her third would likely be Isabella for reasons that are obvious when you read the book. If we have to say things, then I’d say black licorice, a fully loaded Kindle, and comfortable clothes.
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
For Joan and Sabrina, the beverage would definitely be juice from their local juice shop because they’re addicts.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
Joan and Sabrina are big Glee fans having watched it with Joan’s parents when they were young. So, I think they’d go for the Glee version of Raise Your Glass.
