Why this book and why now?

It’s really important to me to represent happy, normal queer families and what that can look like in a very real way. People keep telling me the premise of this book is unrealistic or that family’s like theirs don’t exist, and that’s not true at all. Queer families look different in a million ways, and I want the world to see and embrace us as we are!

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

My book contains a lot of political themes surrounding reproductive rights and so I had to make a lot of changes as I was writing and then after I was done as so many laws and things in the political landscape changed rapidly. I wrote this novel before RBG died, so it was a completely different time!

Do your character names have special significance or meaning?

Mila is derived from the Spanish word for “miracles” and is representative of her role in her mother’s journey. Ari is short for Arielle which means “lion” and refers to her tenacity.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Monk, because mental health representation is important to Mila!

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

1. Her cat, Macavity

2. Her cell phone to keep tabs on her Instagram

3. A notebook to keep track of all the jokes she’s going to write

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

I Think We’re Alone Now by Tiffany, because it’s the soundtrack always in her head when Ari is around.
