Why did you write What Now?
Have you heard of the thought that if you put it into the universe then maybe it will happen? That’s how What Now came about. I am single and live in a small town. I decided to write my own happily ever after. (I’m still waiting for the new woman to come to town and sweep me off my feet).
Who is your favorite character in the book?
It’s hard to choose a favorite. When I’m writing, at times I feel closer to one main character then other times I feel closer to the other main character. I loved Lissa’s patience and trying not to fall in love with Addison. I also loved Addison’s carefree innocence with Lissa as they became friends then the surprise when she found herself falling for her.
What part of What Now was the most fun to write?
I enjoyed writing the scene where they share their first kiss. It is set next to a waterfall and I tried to bring the sounds and smells into it as well as the sensations and feelings flowing inside the characters.
I also loved writing the ending. I don’t want to spoil it, but Lissa and Addison surprise their family.
The epilogue is also one of my favorite scenes to write. It’s always fun to look ahead and see where they are.
How did you come up with the title for your book?
The title is weaved throughout the book. When different things happen to Addison while she’s experiencing the new to her small town vibe she asks Lissa, What Now several times.
What is your writing process like?
I am a pantser, but would love to be more of a plotter. I’m hoping to try a few plotting techniques in the new year to see if it would make my process better. I’ve already tried a few new things on my current work in progress.
Where do you usually write, and what do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
I write in two places. One is at my job. Shhhhhh, don’t tell. When I have free time at work I do pull up the book I’m working on and edit or write.
The other place I write is in my living room at home. See the answer below about my dog, Leo.
I don’t listen to music while I write, but oftentimes the TV is on in the background. I write seated and sometimes I stand-up. I have a portable stand-up desk and if I don’t have it out and get tired of sitting then I’ll put my computer on the kitchen counter and finish a scene there. Quirky writer habits.
How do you celebrate when you finish your book?
There is such a nice feeling when you reach the end of a book, sit back and close your computer. I usually take a moment to bask in the feeling of accomplishment and send the characters on their way. I don’t have a set routine, but sometimes I go out to dinner or have a celebratory drink.
Do you have a pet who helps/hinders your typing?
When I’m writing at home, often times my dog, Leo, curls around me. If I’m on the couch he will wiggle his way between me and the back of the couch. He curls his little terrier body around me so when I look down to one hip I’ll see his nose and if I look to the other, I’ll see his tail. I reach around and give him pat often.
Have you ever cried when writing an emotional scene?
Yes, every one of my books has made me cry at some point. Usually when I’m reading it for the last time after edits, if I’ve done it right, there will be some part in the book that will make me tear up. Of course, I can cry at commercials so that may not mean much. I write romance with lots of feelings and I try to show my characters talking from their hearts.
Do you feel bad putting your characters through the wringer?
You’ll notice that my books don’t have much angst and that is by design. It effects me when my couples break-up or miscommunicate. When I have to write a break-up scene, I don’t linger. I keep writing to get them back to a better place. I get upset with them.
What type of books do you enjoy reading the most?
I love reading sapphic romance. I am a big softie and love the sappy love stories.
Do you only read books in one genre or do you genre hop?
I write romance and that is what I read most of the time. However, KC Luck’s Darkness Series is one I love and that’s led me to read a few others in that genre. I am patiently waiting for the next book in the Static Series by Erin Zak and Jackie D.
I’m drawn to how the characters overcome their external situations while dealing with their emotions and love for their partners.
