Why this book and why now?

It’s winter, and winter to me usually means bundling up and trudging through the season, hoping I won’t get stuck or stranded somewhere. But, with Snowed In, I turned those anxieties on their head and imagined a scenario (ok, it’s a little convoluted!) that I wouldn’t dread being in.

Would you and your main character(s) get along?

I find a lot of similarities between myself and the narrator, Becca. In life, I usually find myself as the center point of any friend group, never too shy, but also never too bold. Like Becca in this story, I’ve found myself in some situations where things could take a turn toward a more interesting outcome with friends/girlfriends/whatever. Sometimes I hold back in those situations, but I had Becca seize the moment, and I think everyone in the story is much happier as a result.

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Kara watches anything Mike Flanigan (Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass) puts out and she will literally never shut up about it to anyone within earshot.

One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.

Becca wants everything to be perfect, so she drives herself mad trying to plan every detail of a perfect date (after this story, maybe it’s with Morgan?). She picks a hip, trendy restaurant, but realizes she should have made a reservation weeks ago. That cool concert she wanted to take her date to? Also sold out. But then Becca and her date go to a food truck that serves the best Korean fusion tacos in the world, see a wonderfully pretentious indie film at a grubby movie theater, and it’s the best night ever because they get to share it with each other.

Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.

Kara’s Gin and Tonic (Because everyone does it wrong)

– 2 oz good gin. I don’t care if you don’t like how it tastes, it’s good!
– 6 oz tonic water. Don’t skimp on this by buying the store brand. Treat yourself.
– 3 ice cubes. And I mean cubes, not crushed, not pellets.
– Juice of 1/2 a lime.
– 2 to 25 dashes of bitters. Go wild.

Mix however you want it, shake it or stir it, just give it to me and let me sulk in the corner for the rest of the night. Love you.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

Kara puts on something by Cocteau Twins. Morgan asks what the woman is saying in the lyrics. Kara shrugs.
