Why this book and why now?
Writers block. Binge watching box sets. A fever dream.
I’d not written anything for weeks before I started Mage, and instead indulged on catching up with some long overdue TV. I’m a fantasy and sci-fi nerd at heart, even though I never considered writing that genre, and so spent a few weeks over Christmas watching some old favouritesand some new finds. I played around with a few ideas, and the NYE 2022 I was sick and in bed by 9pm. Half way through the night, I had a weird dream which kind of included the characters I was fleshing out…it became a pivotal scene in the book!
Do your character names have special significance or meaning?
Yes! The meanings of the names were very important in this book; I wanted that alternative, mystical feel to them, while being unique to the character. Av (or Avani, which is their given name) means earth, while Sare (Seraphine) means fire. There’s a whole conversation in one chapter about the meaning of names.
The characters also have nicknames given to them by Av’s father (Av is Squirrel, and Sare is Fae) both of which also have a story behind them.
What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?
Av would want their obsidian scry, their rune and a crate of good, homemade cider!
One of your main characters is planning a romantic night. Tell us about it.
It would be simple, yet full of consideration. Wine chilling ready when you walk through the door, a hot bath run, dinner made (even though Av isn’t the greatest cook). They’re the type of person who sees romance in the small gestures, not necessarily the grand ones.
Publishing a book is a huge accomplishment and it’s time to party! Choose a celebratory beverage for one of your main characters to toast the release of your new book.
A good old fashioned, traditionally brewed apple cider! Probably made in the shed of one of their friends, and with no idea how strong it is from one batch to the next!
