QUEER NEWS THAT’LL MAKE YOU SMILE
It can seem sometimes like all the news these days is bad. We won’t deny there’s a lot of troubling things going on, including a rise in hate crimes. But it’s not all terrible out there! We want to do our best to highlight good news, because while it may seem like the world is filled with hate, there are many individuals who are living their best lives with a rainbow in their heart.
This week’s good news involves Budapest.
Tens of thousands of people took part in Budapest Pride, marking Hungary’s first Pride celebration since authoritarian leader Viktor Orbán was voted out of office in April, ending his 16-year rule.
The previous year, in an attempt to rally the far-right supporters of his ruling Fidesz party, Orbán pushed through a constitutional ban on Pride events. The move was widely criticized throughout Europe and sparked a huge demonstration during Budapest’s banned Pride march in June. Organizers estimated that 350,000 people attended in a show of opposition to Orbán and his authoritarian policies.
This year’s event had a far more hopeful atmosphere following Orbán’s defeat and the election of Hungary’s new center-right prime minister, Peter Maygar.
Happy Pride Budapest!
