Queer News Worth Clicking Graphic

TB is determined to spread good rainbow news during 2024, which let’s face, is going to be a rough year. There are a lot of elections all over the world, which means we’re in for a lot of scaremongering. While it’s important to stay informed, it’s also vital not to lose sight of all the kindness in the world. Below are the happy queer stories that made TB smile this week. They’re queer news links worth clicking!

Nepal’s Supreme Court rules trans woman is a woman in landmark case — Fantastic news!

Southern states can’t block protections for transgender students, judge rules — Let’s hope this sticks!

Non-binary superstar Sam Smith set to collaborate with Alicia Keys for new recording of iconic song — Can’t wait to listen to it!

Massachusetts will soon have a new law protecting LGBTQ+ families — Wonderful!

A gay waiter got a slur instead of a tip. What happened next, he said, was “absolutely insane.” — What a great way to turn something nasty into a positive!

Sally Brooks with Swiping Right

Have you read Swiping Right and Other Disasters by Sally Brooks yet? Here’s the tagline: What happens when you keep swiping right on the wrong people, when Ms Right is under your nose?

TB and Miranda love exploring places near and far, almost as much as they love a good sapphic book. Follow them on their travels!

TB here.

During our time in Pennsylvania, we spent a day exploring Amish country in Lancaster. It’s a lovely area and most of the photos are from our visit to the Amish Village, an educational museum you can tour. We learned that, contrary to what we had assumed, Amish people do not completely shun modern life. They value things that are “plain” but that doesn’t necessarily mean old-fashioned. For example, many Amish people love to wear Crocs! They buy them in plain, dark colors and appreciate their durability and easy care. Many Amish families these days also have electricity through solar panels on their roofs. They are allowed to use modern lighting and appliances as long as they are not connected to the power grid, which allows them to remain separate from “the English” (in other words, all of us).

Did you know a new Amish buggy is made of fiberglass and can cost around $10,000? Boys typically receive a new buggy when they turn 16, which allows them to travel to the apprenticeships they work in lieu of high school. If you look closely at the photos, you’ll see a special style of Amish bicycle that were everywhere in Lancaster County. They don’t have a seat or pedals but are powered by pushing with their feet, much like a scooter. However, as we learned from our tour guide at the Amish Village, it’s perfectly acceptable for Amish people to take mass transit, accept rides in cars from their non-Amish neighbors, and also to hire a taxi, (or even to fly in an airplane in certain communities), when they need to travel beyond their local area.

Here are some photos.

Have a wonderful weekend!
