It’s all just a game.
The caste system was implemented in the US as a way to combat the chaos of climate change, but it isn’t doing a great job. Alya knows this firsthand thanks to the fire that destroyed her neighborhood and killed her friends and family. She was supposed to have another four years to prepare for the test, but now her hand is forced. All she has to do is get through five games, about halfway up the caste ladder. Piece of cake, right? Except that everyone knows the system is rigged.
