Mountains have been around a lot longer than humans have, which may be one reason they inspire awe. In 1838, a tradition began at Mount Holyoke College for classes to be canceled one day in early fall so students could climb Mount Holyoke and have ice cream at the summit to the mountains for fun and fitness.
