Why this book and why now?

This is a continuation of the adventures of DA Amanda Hawthorne, her fiancée Dr. Jen Dawson, and her colleague Detective Tommy Vietti. I wanted to broaden their roles onto an international stage, so they are called upon to investigate a bioterror attack. I like to mix current events into my adventures/mysteries/thrillers, and this one is eerily realistic as it incorporates some current geopolitical events. I don’t like hard-boiled crime though, so this book’s tone is more of a spy thriller with romance, adventure, and a touch of fantasy. Of course, foxy Roxy makes a comeback and is up to her usual manipulative antics, but she has heart, and we all love that about her. Relationships get complicated and steamy in this book, which makes for some raucous scenes.

What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?

The first draft was just me telling myself the main story. Since this book has nuance and complexity that ties together in the last third, I needed an objective perspective to help me integrate two ideas in an organic way. My editor, Megan, mercilessly deconstructed the plot and pointed me in the right direction. I think a complex book with layers of intrigue, romance, proper humor, and an exciting change of scenery requires several drafts. I went through five drafts of this book in seven months, and I love the way it came together!

What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?

Amanda Hawthorne is the MC in this book and she would binge “Yellowstone” because she would find Beth Dutton amusing. Amanda might even have a few pointers for poor Beth because Amanda has been there and moved on to a new level of badass. Dr. Jen Dawson, Amanda’s fiancée, would most definitely binge “Killing Eve,” because she’d love the psychological thriller aspect and would want to discuss it with Amanda, who would walk away because she’s too much like Villanelle. Agent Roxy MacNeil, who co-stars in Lady Hawthorne, would binge something very dark and troubling…She is an admitted sociopath, so we would need to follow that thread.

What 3 things would your main character want with them if they got stranded away from civilization, and why?

Amanda Hawthorne is the MC in this book, and if she was being true to her character, she’d want cigarettes, wine, and her cello.

What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?

Amanda Hawthorne would start by trying to play cello music by Yo-Yo Ma, although she does consider adding Five Finger Death Punch to her playlist in “Lady Hawthorne.” Jen Dawson and Tommy Vietti would unapologetically roll their eyes and fight for control of the music. Jen would play something upbeat from her CrossFit workouts, like hip-hop or rap. Tommy would play modern country like Walker Hayes.
