Why this book and why now?
To me, there’s never a right or wrong time to write something! It’s whatever I am inspired by at the time. I started this in 2018 when I got into The Mary Tyler Moore Show and then delved into her and Valerie Harper’s biographies. The story sort of sprang from reading about their lives, but with a 50s (instead of 70s) twist. I think this is a perfect time to release it because it hits on women’s topics that are still relevant today. While women’s rights have come a long way there is still work to be done in all arenas.
What is a significant way your book has changed since either the first draft or the way you thought it would turn out when you first had the inspiration?
My novel got a total rewrite last year. The structure stayed the exact same but some characters were added/omitted or their personalities were changed. My writing style had altered from 2018 as well – honed by writing fanfiction. So the overall tone changed and the stakes were heightened.
What TV show would your main character(s) most likely binge watch and why?
Kathryn would secretly watch anything Alice was in and Alice would secretly watch anything Kathryn was in. Especially her German art house films…
What’s your main character(s)’s favorite book and why?
Alice really liked reading The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan because it taught her about female freedom away from domesticity and Kathryn has never forgotten her first reading of The Fountainhead because she was attracted to Dominique.
What song does your character put on to start your book launch party?
“There’s No Business Like Show Business” sung by Ethel Merman because there’s nothing like being in show business. Both Kathryn and Alice know it!
