Gwyl Mabsant is a popular rural festival in Wales during which revelers bet, feast, and drink while (theoretically) honoring the parish saint.
The first mention of this festival in the written record dates back to 1470. There are many possible activities one might encounter, including cockfighting and blindfolded wheelbarrow driving, though our favorite to picture is old woman grinning contests. It may not come as a surprise, given this list, that alcohol consumption features prominently throughout the day.
To celebrate this delightful festival, we’ve selected three sapphic books set in Wales.
