During this week when many are celebrating being in love, it is important to remember that not everyone experiences romantic attraction. And that’s okay.
Society tends to place a lot of importance on romance and romantic love. For those who identify as aromantic, or “aro,” this can come with a lot of misunderstanding and stigma by people who believe they must be cold-hearted or just haven’t met the “right person” yet. In truth, there are many people of all sexual orientations who do not experience the intense emotions of infatuation or have never had a crush. It doesn’t mean they don’t love people, that they don’t desire sex (they may or may not), or that they won’t choose to enter a partnered relationship at some point in their lives.
If you are curious to learn more about aromanticism, we have selected three sapphic books where a character identifies as aromantic.
