National Farm Animals Day sheds light on the living conditions, diets, and hormone injections farm animals may be receiving.
Mostly observed in the US, National Farm Animals Day urges consumers to do research to help ensure the animal products they buy at the store are ethically sourced. For example, “organic” meat and dairy products require that the farm animals do not receive antibiotics or growth hormones, which are often used only to increase production and not for the animal’s benefit. “Free range” eggs require the hens to be housed and fed in specific ways. These practices are fairly new on a larger scale, but given the rise of hobby farms in recent years, it may be easier than ever to find animal products that live up to the highest ethical standards. Supporting a small business is a small change that can make a bigger impact in the world.
