TB loves exploring places near and far, so we’ve created a weekly game where TB goes on an adventure, snaps some photos, and then lets you guess her location.
To answer last week’s mystery, 73% of you were right. Miranda and I visited Vassar College, an absolutely lovely campus. Also, 12% of you guessed I kept saying Meryl Streep walked here. Sadly, I didn’t know that fact before the visit, so now I have to go back so I can say that. I’ve had a crush on her since before I knew what crushes were.
After visiting Vassar, we went to a mansion that wasn’t all that far from the college.
Here are some facts about the home.
1. It’s a historic house museum in Hyde Park, New York.
2. It was constructed between 1896 and 1899, and it’s an example of the Beaux-Arts architecture style.
3. The architectural firm McKim, Mead & White designed the 54-room home.
4. The mansion sits on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River and the grounds include 211 acres.
5. When it was purchased by a railroad magnate, the location made it an easy trek from New York City on the New York Central Railroad.
6. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had a place nearby, encouraged Margaret “Daisy” Van Alen, who inherited the mansion, to donate the home with most of its original furnishings, to the National Park Service in 1940.
For this week’s Sapphic Books in the Wild, we took Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail by Ashley Herring Blake. While the house on the book cover isn’t as grand, they both have columns.
