On this Day of Silence, people take a vow of silence to raise awareness to the struggles of the LGBTQIA+ community.
In 1996, the Day of Silence started with 150 students at the University of Virginia. The students were protesting the bullying, harassment, and silencing of the LGBTQIA+ students in schools. It has since expanded to workplaces and sporting events.
Students at all levels participate in the day. Over half of LGBTQIA+ students say they feel unsafe in school. This day is a simple but effective way to draw attention to a very important issue. Anyone can participate, and the movement is growing all the time.
Today we bring you three sapphic books that deal with homophobia and transphobia.
