5 Random Things Jen Silver Graphic

5 Random Things is our way of helping readers to get to know top sapphic book authors all the while having a bit of fun.

Here are five random facts about Jen Silver.

1. I fearlessly wear socks with my Birkenstocks.

2. I never mastered applying make up.

3. I have no sense of rhythm. If you ask me to dance, prepare to have your toes stamped on.

4. My wife won’t play Scrabble with me. She says I take too long to put a word down.

5. I was an avid reader from an early age. When my mother tried to encourage me to play outside during the summer, I would take a book and sit in a tree to read.

Have you read A Wild Moon Rises yet?

Pet of the Week!

Meet Kyber the dog!

Meet Kyber! Kyber is my best friend. He has been with me since he was 8 weeks old, and we are very close. We live in a little village in the UK and when we go out for a walk he always wants to pass by the pet shop. If we are anywhere nearby it and we don’t stop there, he will sit on the ground and refuse to move further. Submitted by Giulia, a sapphic reader.

QUEER NEWS THAT’LL MAKE YOU SMILE

It can seem sometimes like all the news these days is bad. We won’t deny there’s a lot of troubling things going on, including a rise in hate crimes. But it’s not all terrible out there! We want to do our best to highlight good news, because while it may seem like the world is filled with hate, there are many individuals who are living their best lives with a rainbow in their heart.

This week’s good news involves Tim Walz.

Back in 1999, when a student approached Tim Walz to help start a school’s first gay-straight alliance (GSA) to help queer students, Walz said yes.

Earlier this week, during a speech to introduce Tim Walz, Kamala Harris said, “Tim knew the message that it would send to have a football coach get involved. So he signed up to be the group’s faculty advisor, and as students have said, he made the school a safe place for everybody.”

In a video, Walz said, “I recognized my responsibility in that you have an older, white, straight, married male football coach who’s deeply concerned that these students are treated fairly and that there’s no bullying,” he continued. “And the idea that my players would be interested in coming to that and learn and to speak, to create a culture in a school that was welcoming, open and understanding was something Gwen [my wife] and I always strove for.”

To this day, Tim Walz continues to be a queer ally.

Here’s to hoping for a brighter future.

That’s all for today.

Wishing all of you a wonderful Friday!
