It’s Banned Books Week

Over the weekend, TB and Miranda were in a bookstore in Vermont when they stumbled across a table displaying banned books. It broke their hearts, but it’s also lit a fire in them to do what they can to fight book bans, especially this week, which is Banned Books Week.

We’ve been playing a game in the Tuesday newsletters called Can You Name that Book? We’d like to play it here, too, because this week’s book is a sapphic book that has been targeted for banning. Can you guess what book it is?

Here are the clues:

1. This sapphic young adult historical novel written by Malinda Lo and published on January 19, 2021, received the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.

2. The story is set in 1950s San Francisco and centers around Lily Hu, a teenage daughter of Chinese immigrants as she begins to understand herself and her sexuality.

3. The idea for this story started to percolate when Lo learned about the lesbian bars that operated in North Beach, near San Francisco’s Chinatown.

The reviews have been positive:

“[T]he intersectional, lesbian, historical teen novel so many readers have been waiting for” & “Queer positive.” Kirkus Reviews

“[P]ensive, rich work of queer historical fiction”. School Library Journal

The book has been targeted by parents as Texas who want it removed from libraries.

Buy Us a Coffee

Running IHS takes us many hours every single week. The costs add up. Last year we setup a Buy Us a Coffee page, which allows people to help cover the expenses. We’ve been blown away by the generous response. Not only were people willing to pitch in, but all of the kind notes and encouragement brought more than a few tears to TB’s eyes. If you’d like to support us, click here. Every cup helps immensely!

Have a wonderful day!
